Safety for dogs and cats: GPS trackers, barriers and first-aid kits — the equipment that prevents scares and helps when things go wrong. GPS trackers solve the most distressing problem of all: a pet going missing. They’re particularly useful for cats that go outdoors and dogs that run away when there’s fireworks or a thunderstorm. It’s worth noting that most rely on mobile networks or Bluetooth, and that the actual range varies depending on the area — always check what each model can do before relying on it. There are three types available, which are not equivalent: the 4G GPS collar uses a proper GPS system with its own SIM card — it works anywhere with mobile coverage, but requires a data plan; the Bluetooth tracker is lighter and cheaper, but only tracks within the Bluetooth range of your mobile phone; and the Find My-compatible collar relies on nearby iPhones passing on its location — it is not a standalone GPS device. Barriers are used to demarcate areas in the home: to keep your dog out of the kitchen, to secure a flight of stairs, or to give a pet that’s recovering some peace and quiet. Always check the maximum weight specified by the manufacturer — a barrier designed for small animals won’t stop a medium-sized dog, and that’s when accidents happen. A reminder that costs nothing: in Portugal, microchipping and registration with SIAC are compulsory for dogs, cats and ferrets. This is what ensures the animal is returned if it goes missing — no tracker can replace that. Also check out our range of walking accessories. How to choose a tracker for a dog or cat: for tracking outside mobile phone coverage, compare mobile coverage, battery life, weight and whether a SIM card is required. A 4G GPS tracker, a Bluetooth tracker and an Apple Find My collar do not all work in the same way. Check out the guide to GPS collars before making your choice.
