A hammock bed for cats combines two very common preferences: resting on a surface that moulds to the body and observing the house from a safe vantage point. There are models with their own frame, as well as those designed to be attached to a window, radiator or furniture.
Why do cats like hanging beds?
The height provides a good view of the room and can minimise disturbances. The slightly flexible fabric moulds to the body’s shape, whilst the airflow from underneath can make the bed comfortable on hot days.
Choosing the right model
- With a frame: easy to move around and suitable for those who don’t want to use fixings.
- For windows: offers light and a view, but requires suction cups and glass in good condition.
- For radiators: must be compatible with the radiator and used only within the specified temperature limits.
- Macramé or hanging: also serves as a decorative feature, provided the mounting can support the weight.
Check the weight and dimensions
Check the weight limit and allow for the cat’s weight. The surface must allow the cat to lie down without its body being too constricted. For large cats, opt for a wide base and sturdy support points.
Safe installation
Follow the instructions and test the stability before first use. For models with suction cups, clean the glass and the suction cups, remove any grease and check the grip regularly. Do not install it on stairs, fragile objects or in places where a fall could cause injury.
How to get your cat used to it
Place the bed near an area your cat already likes. Let them explore at their own pace and use a blanket with a familiar scent or some treats. Never restrain them or repeatedly place them in a structure that still makes them feel anxious.
Cleaning and maintenance
Remove hair with a soft brush or vacuum cleaner. If the fabric is washable, follow the recommended temperature to prevent the fibres and seams from becoming distorted. Check the hooks, suction cups, knots and frame every week, especially in homes with more than one cat.
