Cooling mats for dogs and cats: how to choose and use them

A cooling mat can help on hot days. Find out how to choose the right size, lay out the mat and use it safely.

On hot days, a cooling mat for dogs and cats can provide a more comfortable surface on which to rest. It is no substitute for fresh water, shade or a well-ventilated room, but it can be a useful addition to make the summer more comfortable.

How does a cooling mat work?

There are models featuring pressure-activated gel, cooling foam or heat-dissipating materials. With gel models, the cooling effect begins when the pet lies down and subsides after a while when not in use. They usually do not require electricity or a freezer, but it is always advisable to check the manufacturer’s instructions.

How to choose the right size

Your pet should be able to lie with most of its body on the mat without feeling cramped. Measure from the chest to the base of the tail whilst your pet is lying down and compare this with the product’s dimensions. For large dogs, two mats placed side by side may be more practical than a small one.

Where to place it

  • on a flat, dry floor away from direct sunlight;
  • in the spot where the pet usually rests;
  • on the pet’s bed, only if the manufacturer permits it;
  • in the car, always in the shade and never as a substitute for ventilation.

Avoid rough surfaces and places where the mat might get caught or punctured.

How to get your dog or cat used to it

Don’t force contact. Place the mat near their resting area and let the pet explore it. A toy or treat placed on top can create a positive association. Some cats prefer to sniff it or touch it with their paws first before lying down.

Safety and cleaning

Check regularly for loose seams, holes and signs of chewing. If the filling becomes exposed, remove the mat and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Clean with a damp cloth and a mild product suitable for the material; do not use bleach or harsh detergents unless specifically instructed to do so.

Even with a cooling mat, keep water available and avoid exercise during the hottest part of the day. Excessive panting, weakness, vomiting, disorientation or very red gums may indicate overheating and require immediate veterinary attention.

Is it worth it?

It is particularly useful for pets that are constantly seeking out the coolest spot on the floor, dogs with thick coats, and homes that get very hot. Effectiveness varies depending on the model and the pet, so the best choice combines the right size, durable material and supervised use.

At Bafinho you’ll find a range of cooling mats and beds in different sizes.
