Your cat scratches the sofa and you think it’s just to annoy you. In fact, it’s one of the most important behaviours for your cat: scratching slows down the growth of its claws, marks its territory using the glands in its paws, and is part of stretching its body. The problem isn’t the instinct — it’s the target.
Why do cats scratch?
- Claw maintenance — scratching removes the oldest layers of the claws.
- Marking territory — it leaves visual and scent marks on its paws.
- Stretching — it stretches and exercises the muscles in the back and legs.
- Stress relief and enjoyment — many cats scratch when they wake up or when they’re excited.
How to choose the right scratching post
Three key criteria:
- Stability — a scratching post that wobbles or falls over when the cat uses it will quickly be abandoned. It must be sturdy.
- Height — cats want to stretch out fully. A tall, multi-level scratching post also serves as a place for exercise and a vantage point.
- Material — sisal (rope) and corrugated cardboard are the favourites for most cats. Test the texture next to the sofa to see which one your cat prefers.
Position: more important than it seems
Scratching posts should never be tucked away in a corner. Your cat will use whatever is in the way: next to the sofa, by the bed or near the front door. If they’ve already chosen a spot in the house (even if it’s the sofa), place the scratching post right next to it — and protect the sofa temporarily.
How to redirect your cat from the sofa to the scratching post
- Place the scratching post where the damage occurs.
- Catnip and treats on the new scratching post make it more appealing.
- Never shout or punish your cat — they’ll associate the punishment with you, not with the behaviour.
- Praise and reward them when they use the right scratching post.
More than just scratching: vantage points
Cats love heights. A hanging bed or a raised bed next to the scratching post turns the spot into a place for rest and keeping watch — and your cat is more likely to adopt the scratching post if it’s part of ‘their’ territory.
Instead of fighting their instinct, give them the right target: sturdy, tall and in the spot where they like to be. The sofa will thank you for it. 🐾
