Cat food: dry food, wet food and everyday supplements. Cats are strict carnivores — the basis of their diet must be animal protein, and that is what distinguishes a good-quality cat food from a cheap one. Two points that make a real difference. Firstly, hydration: cats have a weak thirst instinct, inherited from their desert ancestors, and those fed only dry food tend to drink very little — which is why wet food helps maintain long-term urinary health. Secondly, the transition: switching food from one day to the next can lead to refusal to eat or diarrhoea. Mix the new food with the old and gradually increase the proportion over the course of about a week. Needs change with age — kittens, adults and senior cats have different requirements — and conditions such as being overweight, kidney disease or allergies require a specific diet prescribed by the vet. As for equipment: an automatic water fountain with a filter helps with hydration, as cats prefer running water to still water in a bowl; and in homes with more than one cat, a feeder with an RFID tag only opens for the correct cat. Complement this with litter and hygiene products, and take a look at our beds and cat houses. Cat water bowls, drinking fountains and feeders: As well as diet, choosing the right equipment helps to organise your cat’s routine. For flowing water without needing a nearby socket, take a look at the 2.5-litre cordless stainless steel water fountain.
